Context
Art Movements Foundation and Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery, with the support of ALERT Studio, continue through the third edition of the Art Movements Foundation Contemporary Drawing Award to bring drawing to the forefront as a living form of visual expression and reflection.
The project, established as a constant platform for encounters between artists, curators, collectors, and the public, reaffirms interest in drawing as a territory for exploring ideas, not merely as a formal exercise.
The exhibition offers a perspective on drawing as a tool for observation, critical reflection, and emotional engagement, at a moment when images are often generated or filtered through technological layers — from digital media to artificial intelligence. In this context, drawing does not appear as a reaction, but as a distinct presence: a plastic means of constructing meaning, interrogating reality, and illustrating it.
The selection, made by a jury of experts in the Romanian contemporary art scene, brings together works by artists from different generations and backgrounds, which collectively create, within the exhibition space, a map of contemporary drawing — a territory no longer seen as a prelude to major artistic techniques such as painting and sculpture, or merely as a technical exercise, but as an autonomous medium of thought.
Drawing no longer serves a subsequent image; it is itself the image of thinking in action — both a project and a trajectory.
In the logic of a visual world dominated by algorithms, drawing remains the site of intention and natural gesture. Whether manifested as conceptual, rigorous, and analytical work, or as a visceral, impulsive, and direct gesture, each piece becomes a form of thought and presence within the exhibition space.
Drawing remains one of the most direct forms of visual reflection — from critical analysis of society to meditation on memory, the body, history, or intimacy. Some works pursue the fidelity of mimesis, others explore the creative construction of poiesis, while others transform personal experience into catharsis.
The exhibition does not seek unity but the relevance of a practice that not only does not exhaust itself but transforms along with the sensibilities of the times and the artists. It does not follow a common theme, but allows the plurality of thinking and expressive forms in drawing to emerge — a visual map of the present, where line, light, shadow, and paper carry experience, emotion, and lucidity.
In a time when the visual is consumed rapidly, artists — supported by the existence of this award, by the foundation that offers it, and by the artistic act itself — choose to return to the slow gesture of the line, the direct contact with paper, and a way of thinking through the hand.
