The Dark Conception: Heresies of Lilith and Saturn

Heretical heirs of Lilith and Saturn, Robert Lőrincz (b. 1995, Sfântu Gheorghe) and Paul Baraka Marat (b. 1994, Arad) share a complex spiritual genealogy, dark and heavy as lead, in which obsessive-compulsive anxieties, revolts, traumas, sexual desires, and shadowy reveries intertwine. Consciously choosing the path of the left hand, it is only through profanations, excess, or melancholy that the two artists undertake their painful nocturnal cathartic process.
Robert Lőrincz possesses a solid artistic training, mastering with remarkable skill what has become increasingly rare among the younger generation: the technique of drawing. His masters are Goya and El Greco. From the former, he inherits unease and a sabbath-like atmosphere; from the latter, elongated forms (in certain paintings) and a sense of nobility. At the same time, Lőrincz draws inspiration from the Gothic bestiary, 1940s cinema, and Japanese comics. The resulting imagery creates an atmosphere that is at times melancholic, at others nightmarish. Lőrincz does not favor ordinary situations. In order to break “normal norms,” in some works that might otherwise fit within classical standards, the artist feels compelled to resort to a kind of postmodern kitsch, inserting into the narrative characters such as Pokémon or other Japanese-derived elements elevated to the status of genuine artistic fetishes.
Paul Baraka Marat, in turn, has taken as models the monsters of cathedral sculpture and Gothic forms filtered through the sensibility of dark rock. Baraka likewise employs an assumed, aestheticized kitsch, conceived in order to integrate his imaginary content into a postmodern Gothic rhetoric; however, in his case, it acquires a distinctly profanatory charge. For instance, in the engraving titled The Last Judgment VI, among the saints appear characters from cartoons broadcast on Cartoon Network. In another case, Baraka scandalously reinterprets the scene of Saint George slaying the dragon. In the sculpture The Bestiary That Judges Its Judge, a monster mounted on a rhinoceros kills another creature, from whose throat flows not blood but the colors of the rainbow. One can discern here the archetypal influence of Lilith, who not only does not shy away from scandal, but actively seeks it out. Nor are certain fetishistic tendencies absent from Baraka’s work, especially visible in the treatment of human bodies, drawing on BDSM practices.
A first pairing of the two artists took place in the winter of 2024 at the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu, in an exhibition curated by Alexandru Constantin Chituță. The idea took root within the visual imaginary of Bucharest’s contemporary art galleries, with Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery hosting, from March 12 to April 4, 2026, the duo show The Dark Conception: Heresies of Lilith and Saturn.
We do not believe that, in the case of Lőrincz and Baraka, we are dealing with perpetual malcontents destined to remain, like excommunicates, confined to the catacombs of their inner lives. Their work must be brought into the light and confronted directly. Only in this way will the monsters lose their power. In this sense, we are convinced that it was not Goya who was unredeemed, but rather the age in which he lived. The sleep of reason once again gives birth to monsters, and our society has sunk yet again into a grotesque sabbath carnival, where mass crime and war are carried out in the name of perverted ideals. Yet we know, to quote the title of Goya’s Caprice no. 19: All will fall!

The exhibition Crises emerges from this unstable ground, where personal experience intertwines with collective traumas, and the artists’ works—acting as a litmus test for society and reflecting reality—capture the anxieties and tensions of the present. They highlight the very capacity of art to transform personal experience and global tensions into visual and narrative reflection. In this way, while the exhibition does not aim to document contemporary crises realistically, it invites contemplation on how these tensions seep into everyday life and shape our perception of the world.

The Art Movements Foundation and Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery announce the winners of the first edition of the Art Movements Foundation Prize for Emerging Painting – “Emerging Me: Breaking the Ice”, a competition that attracted 118 artists from Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Hungary, and the United Kingdom, with a total of 255 submitted works.
The First Prize (€2,500) was awarded to Ștefania Ciobanu for her painting “It’s Better This Way”, oil on canvas. Ștefania Ciobanu (b. 2000, Iași) is a PhD candidate in Visual Arts, specializing in Painting, at the West University of Timișoara, and holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Painting from the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași.

Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery invites the public to the emerging painting exhibition EMERGING ME: BREAKING THE ICE – 2025, curated by Gilda Ghinoiu, on view from June 5 to July 5, 2025. The exhibition “Getting Lost in Time” / “Pierzându-se în timp”, by Alin Carpen, brings together art objects conceived and created during different creative periods. The works are arranged as a puzzle of memory, resembling a map that evokes time, ephemerality, and destruction. It tells a story in which the artist’s engineer-architect spirit is “surpassed” by metaphor and sensitivity.
Alin Carpen uses ready-made objects, which he meticulously constructs, seeking to deceive the perception of reality and to filter it through a personal perspective on memory. In his works, Carpen unites four elements — iron, water, fire, and image — recurring motifs in his creation, while the mirror becomes a gateway, a tool of memory meant to disturb perception and place the viewer at the center of their own transience.

Art Movements Foundation announces the winners of the first edition of the Art Movements Foundation Prize for Contemporary Drawing 2023 and the winner of the special section Collector's Prize. The jury made up of six connoisseurs of the Romanian contemporary art scene chose the winners and finalists through a score awarded by secret ballot, in the competition that attracted the participation of 347 artists and a total number of 587 works.

At the end of a 2023 rich in painting exhibitions and many big names present in Romanian galleries, I was happy to discover a young artist and see her personal exhibition, "Pulsatilla". In the space of an old restored house, where the Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery is now located, Daniela Vîrlan invited the public on a meditative journey, through her works in vivid colors, loaded with fantastic characters and symbols.

Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery celebrates one year since its opening with a contemporary dance performance. On Thursday, December 28, at 6 p.m., Răzvan Mazilu and Ștefan Lupu will expand the Pulsatilla exhibition space in a performative dialogue with a soundtrack by Hiroshi Yoshimura and Harold Budd. Through gesture and movement, the dancers will integrate Daniela Vîrlan's paintings into their choreography, starting from an idea of the cultural manager Raluca Băloiu.

We invite you to the opening of the "Colors, Underwater Love" exhibition, curated by Raluca Ilaria Demetrescu, on Tuesday, May 30, starting at 6:30 p.m., in the Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery space at Jean-Louis Calderon no. 34. The artistic event is an attempt to reposition the watercolor technique in the top Romanian arts, in which 16 artists who use watercolor as their main working technique or who practice it intensively, in addition to other disciplines, take part.

MoBu - International Art Fair of Bucharest (May 19-28, Romaero), the largest and most ambitious contemporary art fair ever held in Romania, has come to an end. Besides the big galleries (Strata, Romană, Nemțoi, Baraka, Atelier 030202 etc.), I was delighted by the presence of the young Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery, which entered the public circuit at the end of last year. It is entirely meritorious that they came to MoBu with only one artist, Olimpiu Bandalac, a personality of experimentalism from the last decades.
