PULSATILLA
"In Pulsatilla, the latest exhibition at the Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery in Bucharest, Daniela Vîrlan approaches a new direction in her artistic practice and even if the themes of the paintings are new, we recognize specific elements of the artist's previous creation.
Blue Hour:
The Punctum proximum of her creation is that (inner) eye that scrutinizes, the (self) gaze filtered through sensibility as an aesthetic category. The Punctum Remotum adjusts through wide-closed windows to the red, pink, blue twilight lights over hills, seas, clouds, Milky Ways.
Landscapes (interior):
The artist illustrates a fabulous world, composed of fragments of fairy tales springing from dreams with putti, wings and winged beings, flames, plants and suggestions of what we want, abstract elements, dripping pulsatilles located between the worlds here and there from the self and from the content the horizons. Intuition becomes a concept, technique ars poetica, it is poetry of painted concepts, controlled by spontaneous gestures that intentionally leave the pictorial surface in an intermediate phase. Daniela Vîrlan looks with wide closed eyes (at herself) at purple, apotheotic red and blue skies, floats with her eyelash extension brush among new and diaphanous apparitions of flowers and angels.
Healing Remedy:
It seems as if a door is (inter)opening to a world, suggestion and indication of the way, looking at oneself, searching for one/some shades of red - allegory in the rhythm of flying wings. Red garance, bordeaux, crimson, consuming on the one hand and purifying fire on the other are describing realities from dreams, apoteotic interior - exterior landscapes. The construction of the sketch of the painting (almost) is the concept of the artworks, it starts from the (internal) eye, a dreamlike vision and ascends with the flight of an angel to other heavens where the eye of the world, the eye of God is attentive to our gestures and the angels that populate the air in allegorical frames. On the other hand, the imagined landscape can be a pretext, a kind of pledge of personal aspirations represented by the clear and blue sky on this time. Supported by the incendiary burgundy red that suggests the idea of an end but also a new beginning through purification by fire, the gesture of the hand holding the brush or the eye extended by it is continuous, fluid, without hesitation, in a single movement in places but complemented by suggestive details. Color itself is a concept, the wind caused by the beating of the angels wings is a remedy for the mindsoul and the eye of God or perhaps of Big Brother continuously pulsates over the (purple) flowers of the world."
